3 ways to make your life happier in 2011

If you don’t have time to read this, here they are:
1. Write down your goals.
2. Assess your life.
3. Take action, now.

1. Write down your goals

Get a sheet of paper, or open up a text file on your computer. Type out these words with numbers beside them.

1. physical
2. spiritual
3. mental
4. emotional

Under each word, write or type your goals, or what you like to accomplish, for each of these. Write or type as much as you want. Let it all pour out of you, like uncapped fire hydrant.

The body is more than the physical
It’s so easy to focus on one area of our life and leave the other areas neglected. The problem with doing that, however, is that the entire human experience is comprised of just more than one area, it’s a composition of all four areas, almost like a melody in a song.

Allowing one part of yourself to be malnourished will, inevitably, affect the other parts of yourself. For this reason alone, it’s paramount to identify and develop those four areas–physical, spiritual, mental, emotional. You’ll make yourself happier if you identify and strengthen all of these different parts of yourself.

2. Assess your life

Look at your goals. Now, look around your house. Are there things in your house that are not congruent with your goals? Are there objects or possessions that don’t serve any purpose to help you reach your goals? If so, get rid of them. Sell them. Donate them. Give them away. Getting rid of excess junk brings clarity to your life.

Get rid of the clutter
You need a clean slate to reach your goals. And being surrounded by junk that doesn’t serve to motivate, challenge, and inspire you will just hold you back. That junk will tie you down like the Lilliuptians tied down Gulliver. Having a lot of junk around you can affect your psyche to the point that you feel crowded, cornered with your back against a wall. However, until you eliminate the clutter, you’re probably so used to this feeling that you blame it on not-getting-enough-sleep or something else. Getting rid of the clutter is a way to make yourself happier and freer.

3. Take action, now.

Take action, now.

To make yourself happier, it is important that you have a goal to move towards. Otherwise, you’re caught up in the laundry-room-of-life getting tossed around with other fabrics that don’t know where they are going. Sure, it’s fun to go in circles and meet a cute sock or nice pair of trousers every once in a while, but at the end of the cycle, you’re getting tossed into a basket and taken to someone’s dresser drawer. Okay, it’s probably a weak metaphor, but the point is, if you don’t take action to figure out what-it-is-you-want, then you’re going to get caught up in the machinery of someone-else’s-dreams.

Take action by writing down your specific goals for each room of your life–physical, spiritual, mental, emotional. Next, if you are a social type person who enjoys having others to help you reach your goals, find that tribe of people and befriend them. Then, read books, watch videos, listen to audio of people who have reached that goal, and pay careful attention to what they had to do to get there. Success leaves clues. If you want to get to where the giants are, walk in their footprints.

Make yourself happier with setting goals and reaching them
You’ll find that having goals and making them happen is one of the best ways to make yourself happier in life. Quit worrying about other people, and focus on being the best you can be in life. When you reach that point, you’ll be in a position to help others because you’ll be operating from a position of strength and confidence.

summary

1. Write down your goals.
